It’s time for the taxi industry to ‘go digital’

May 25th, 2016 by Mandy Fazelynia

The use of apps and online booking facilities in the travel sector has become a way of life. Although still loved by many, the use of travel shops has vastly declined in preference of online alternatives.

Until now, however, taxi operators have remained traditional with customers calling a cab and paying with cash at the end of their journey. But things are rapidly changing as customers demand for taxis to ‘go digital’. Online booking, payment by card and location tracking are just some of the things that passengers now require.

There are already many apps on the landscape that taxi firms can tap in to – such as Uber, Gett and Hailo – as well as aggregators such as Cabfind and Minicabit that assist with cab despatch. For smaller taxi firms, these ready-made tools are ideal, providing a quick, easy and cost effective solution.

On the flip-side, some larger operators are developing their own bespoke apps and solutions – creating online booking tools, integrating apps with their websites and integrating cab despatch with online platforms.

Whatever size of taxi firm you operate, it really is time to ‘go digital’ and there’s a simple solution out there.

For telecommunications resellers looking to support these changes in the taxi industry, unified communications experts, Zest4, can help. Zest4’s M2M partner programme provides a complete M2M package incorporating expert knowledge and technical support, training through the Zest4 partner academy, marketing support, optimised tariffs and competitive commercials.

Why M2M solutions are a ‘must’ for the taxi industry

May 16th, 2016 by Mandy Fazelynia

Contactless payment is now a familiar sight on London’s busy underground network. Helping users to avoid the ticket queues and move around more quickly, this revolutionary solution has changed the transport system for the better.

But while contactless payment has made a firm impression on the London underground, the same cannot be said for the rest of the London transport network, particularly taxi cabs.

However, the evolution of M2M technology is changing all of that.

By the simple installation of mobile broadband, taxi drivers can now benefit from a host of tools and apps that will help improve their business…and the service they offer to passengers.

Smartphone Apps such as Uber and Hailo are already popular amongst cab drivers, with Wired magazine recently reporting that 40% of London cabbies use ‘Hailo’ to help them gain extra business. By maintaining a constant and cost effective Wifi connection, taxi drivers can access these apps and benefit from the information they provide.

Mobile broadband in taxis also provides additional benefits for passengers. In our increasingly busy world where time is of the essence, passengers can access the internet to catch up on work emails or plan their day ahead. In fact, the reliance on mobile Wifi has become such that a recent survey of transport in England reported that 45% of emails are opened on the move.

Contactless payment is also becoming a reality for taxi travel with the development of mobile payment solutions. All-in-one taxi booking and payment facilities are also now available such as ‘eeZee taxi’ from the Payment House. Customer will no longer need to worry if they have cash for their journeys and this will open up a potential new customer base for taxi firms UK-wide.

Contactless payment has become such a way of for Londoners that Transport for London (TfL) recently announced a new ruling for black cab drivers. All black cabs will be required to accept card payments for their fares by October 2016 which will make journeys swifter and simpler than ever before.

This move towards mobile broadband within taxi travel opens up a wealth of opportunities for telecommunications resellers across the UK. Many resellers will already be supplying mobile solutions to taxi firms and drivers, so the opportunity to upgrade their solution is within easy reach.

Since then, the two companies have formed a close and fruitful working relationship which has set firm foundations for future success and growth.

Entering the M2M Arena:

M2M was certainly an area that the Trinity Maxwell team were aware of and were keen to pursue in the future. The rapidly growing market, the chance to offer innovative solutions to clients, and the potential for very high margins, firmly highlighted M2M as an opportunity not to be missed.

But the lack of information and the lack of support from wholesale providers had prevented the telecoms company from exploring the M2M opportunity further. The team were nervous to leap into the unknown and risk jeopardising their reputation for providing high levels of service.

Zest4’s launch of M2M solutions following the partnership with Arkessa, gave Trinity Maxwell the M2M lifeline that they needed. Simplicity and availability of information were key, and Zest4’s complete enablement and support programme which includes expert knowledge, technical support, training, marketing support, optimised tariffs and competitive commercials, has enabled the London-based company to confidently enter the market.

M2M Success:

Since the launch of M2M solutions into their product portfolio, Trinity Maxwell have seen a very positive response from their existing client-base and have secured a fantastic opportunity with a brand new customer.

It is still early-days since the introduction of the new service and the company have a programme of marketing activities planned, but they are incredibly confident that M2M will bring them significant success.

Zest4 will continue to support Trinity Maxwell in their M2M journey, and are committed to helping them every step of the way.
